In 1955, political party, Mapai won elections for Tel Aviv Council, Golda Meir, as head of the party, was one of three nominees for Tel Aviv Mayor. She lost by two votes on the grounds that she was a woman. However, 14 years later, after the death of Levi Eshkol, Golda Meir became the first Israeli female prime minister!
